Intouriste vers 1960

This original Soviet travel poster was published circa 1960 by Intourist, the official state tourism agency of the USSR, to promote Tbilisi as a destination for international visitors. It presents the Georgian capital through an unusual combination of photography and decorative graphic design.

At the centre, an elevated panoramic photograph captures Tbilisi spreading along the banks of the Kura River. Bridges, historic buildings and the surrounding hills reveal the city’s distinctive landscape, where ancient quarters and modern development meet.

The photographic view is framed by an elaborate monochrome border inspired by traditional Georgian ornament. Its floral motifs, scrolling forms and jewel-like details create the impression of looking through a richly decorated architectural opening. The restrained grey palette of the border contrasts elegantly with the natural colours of the cityscape.

Intourist was founded in 1929 to organise travel within the Soviet Union and to present its cities, landscapes and cultures to foreign audiences. Its posters often combined modern photography with regional artistic motifs, offering an idealised but visually compelling image of the Soviet republics.

A distinctive example of mid-century Soviet travel advertising, this original poster combines documentary photography, Georgian decorative traditions and refined graphic composition. It will appeal to collectors of Intourist posters, Soviet design, vintage travel imagery and works connected with Georgia and Tbilisi.
